Unitech prepares customers for approaching GS1 sunrise date

As the GS1 DataBar sunrise date approaches, Unitech America has been working hard to make sure our customers are educated and ready.

Formerly known as RSS, or Reduced Space Symbology, GS1 DataBar was developed as an alternative to EAN/UPC bar codes. It is smaller than the current UPC code and can hold far more data, which makes it a step up from most current bar code marking applications. For example, a GS1 DataBar code can contain more detail about a piece of produce including the supplier and country of origin, whereas the current UPC code would only include the type of fruit. This extra information has proven to be invaluable to retailers and makes inventory management and ordering far more efficient.

There are two sunrise dates for the GS1 DataBar. GS1 US recommends that retailers who sell loose produce and process manufacturer coupons begin preparing their point of sale technology to scan GS1 DataBar symbols by January 1, 2010. Retailer adoption of GS1 DataBar scanning of loose produce items and manufacturer coupons is well underway in the U.S., and suppliers in these categories are continuing on the path of complete implementation. All other categories of retailers should prepare point of sale hardware and software systems for GS1 DataBar by January 1, 2014. Examples of industries expressing interest in implementation of GS1 DataBar prior to 2014 are health care, magazine publishers, cosmetics, jewelry, and categories of fresh foods.

Unitech’s MS337 handheld scanner is an excellent solution for any business looking to comply with the new GS1 standards. Its powerful 2D imager can read all major symbologies including GS1 DataBar. The scanner’s aggressive decoding software provides unmatched performance resulting in greater efficiency and productivity. Its rugged design is capable of withstanding multiple 5-foot drops to concrete, making it perfect for a variety of applications from retail to health care.
